Story of Pak Slamet Hartono
Glass Engraver

I was born in 1960, I was infected by polio at the age of 6, because at that time there was no campaigning for polio vaccination. I was worried I would not be able to support myself in life.
I was recruited to work as a worker in a factory, I felt lucky to have work. Within the factory there was a new division engraving on glass with a rotary wheel. I was fascinated by the beautiful patterns. I asked to be taught and was told it was not for me, but I persisted and got formal training because they realize, people with disabilities have more patience and determination. The company then saw the opportunity to use people like me with similar handicaps. I met wife who was hired to do engraving as well and was put under my supervision. we got married and have two children who are grown up by now. The company I worked for 35 years went bankrupt, and I lost my beloved tool of work and job. I met the Darius Tobing Foundation 5 years ago and I am now back at work doing even more beautiful patterns designed by the Foundation. I have a wish it is to teach and pass on my skill to more people, especially those with disabilities.

Story of Pak Suyono
Glass Engraver

For me the art of glass engraving is very beautiful! I enjoy the challenging work and have great satisfaction to see the pretty finished products and people liking it. I was born in 1968 and was infected by Polio at the age of 3, and growing up with my disabilities, I was worried I would not find work. I found out a factory was looking for people with disabilities to give training to and that is where I met my teacher, Slamet Hartono who passed on his beautiful skills and passion of engraving on glass to me. Same as my teacher, I lost my job because the company went bankrupt and I am now happy to get the support of The Darius Tobing Foundation for me to continue engraving on glass.
I hope that I can share my skills to the young generation to keep this unique art to continue.
